My Heater Will Not Work

!: My Heater Will Not Work

You have no heat and you have no idea why you just know the furnace is not lighting. In one of my other articles I told you about how important the thermocouple is to the standing pilot furnace.

In this article I would like to talk about another type of heater igniter the direct spark ignition. I will explain the function of it and try to help you understand what you can do to help yourself when it comes to repairing this igniter.

There are steps that each heating system follows called sequence of operation, the operation of a direct spark system as follows.

1. A call for heat is created by the thermostat.

2. The small fan (induced draft motor) will start.

3. A signal is received by the ignition module.

4. Voltage is applied from the ignition module to the sparker (a ticking sound may be heard) causing the burners to light.

5. Within less then a minute the blower or fan should start to turn sending warm air in to the home.

The spark ignition is just that, a small spark is used to light the pilot light or the burner depending on the system. There will be a white box or module mounted in side the unit with several small gauge wires attached to it. There will be a thicker wire amongst all the rest it will be attached to a steel rod. Like a spark plug in your car a spark is generated between the rod and another metal surface.

The rod can become dirty and may need to be cleaned, but it is rare that it is the reason for the furnace failing to light and supply heat to your home. What my happen is the thick wire that connects the igniter rod to the ignition module may become loose or disconnected all together. It is a lot like a spark plug wire so it may become dry and crack so it will not carry the electrical charge to the rod. The wire will need to be replaced and can be found at your local appliance parts store.

The ignition module can and will fail for any reason it chooses. If you follow the steps and find that there is no ticking sound coming from the area of the sparker rod then it is a safe bet that you have a bad module and while you can if you choose fix it your self it may be a good time to call a local repair company. The technician will have experience with your equipment and be able to diagnosis and repair the problem quickly.

One other item that should be red flag to a bigger problem, that would require a service technician, would be, if when you call for heat from the thermostat, this is depending on the type of heater you have, that the inducer motor does not start up. Make sure that you check to see if you have power at the heater. Once you have determined that, then you should call a service technician.

Energy Efficient Electric Heaters

!: Energy Efficient Electric Heaters

When purchasing an electric heater for either your home or your garage you are looking for a way to heat the area in the most energy efficient way possible. If you need an electric heater you are probably looking to heat or warm a specific area of your home and by doing so you are already becoming more energy efficient.

This is true because using a portable type of electric heater gives you the ability to raise the thermostat on your home's main energy sources such as central heating. Because with a central heating system you are heating the entire home and not just the rooms you and your family are occupying. So even by raising the thermostat 3 or 4 degrees can make a huge impact on your overall energy use and consumption.

By implementing an electric heater you can move the heater as you leave or enter a specific room. So how do you make sure that an electric heater you use in your home or garage is energy efficient? Start by finding the correct size heater for the specific room you will be heating. For example if you are going to use an electric garage heater there is no need to purchase a heater that will heat 900 square feet if your garage is only 500 square feet. More is not better in this particular case it is just a waste.

Next take a look at what type of features the heater offers. Many of the newer models offer either a built in thermostat or a programmable thermostat. This will help you to maintain a comfortable temperature by alleviating any fluctuation of temperature in the room. A feature like this can also help you to turn off the heater when it is not in use by setting a specific time for the heater to turn off.

This can be an especially useful feature in electric garage heaters as often times we may forget that they are running and may run unnecessarily. Another thing to consider when making your purchase is how the heated air is circulated throughout the room. Once the air has been heated it is important that it be effectively distributed in the room so look for a heater that has a built in fan that helps distributes the air properly. Even distribution alleviates some of the problems associated with older models that gave the rooms hot and cold spots.

One thing you should also know about energy efficient electric heaters is that almost every manufacturer has now take the time to build in several types of safety features. Almost all of them incorporate some sort of automatic shut off system if the heater should actually be knocked over and some, if not most, also have an overheating shut off which will turn the heater off it is blocked or just overheating from non recommended continuous usage.

Heat & Biodiesel

!: Heat & Biodiesel

Heat is needed during the biodiesel conversion process for the following reasons:

1. Preheating your oil.
2. Heating your biodiesel during the settling process.
3. Drying water out of water-washed biodiesel.
4. Recovering methanol from biodiesel.

The three main types of heating systems offered today are:

-Oil Preheating Systems.
-In-Line Heating Systems.
-In-Tank Heating Systems

Oil preheating systems are a safe traditional method of pre-heating the oil prior to processing. The system conists of a steel drum with at least one thermostat controlled barrel heater and insulation. This is a very safe method because there are no heating elements in contact with the liquid. The standard Freedom Fueler comes with this type of heating system.

In-Line Heating Systems

Better For:

- Pre-heating your oil.
- Drying water-washed biodiesel

Drawbacks:

- Requires a pump to operate.
- Cannot heat throughout entire process.
- Elements must be replaced periodically.

In-line heating systems are better than a pre-heating system but they have one common flaw, they all require a pump to circulate the oil through the heater in order for the heater to work. They are mainly intended to pre-heat the oil and dry the water out of biodiesel that has been water-washed. With an in-line heater using submerged elements, the user must remember to start the flow of liquid before turning the heater on.Note: All heaters have what is called a Watt Density. Watt density is the number of watts the heater puts out divided by the surface area of the heaters element. The supplier of heating systems recommends no higher than 30 watts per square inch in the biodiesel process. All of the heaters have a watt density of 28 watts per square inch.

In-Tank Heating Systems

Best For:

- Preheating your oil.
- Heating biodiesel during settling.
- Drying water out of water-washed biodiesel.
- Removing methanol from dry-washed biodiesel.

An In-Tank Heating System is the ultimate in biodiesel heating systems, with the ability to maintain the batch temperature even if the temperature in your shop drops overnight.

Efficient Central Heating Needs the Right Thermostat For the Job

!: Efficient Central Heating Needs the Right Thermostat For the Job

With the winter season quickly approaching, central heating for your home becomes a priority. In order to keep your home warm, all components of your central heating system must be in proper working order. However, there are some typical faults with the system that tend to happen at the worst possible time. One such common problem is frost damage, which can damage and sometimes destroy boilers and pipes.

Traditionally, central heating systems were designed with the frost thermostat installed in close proximity to the boiler. The thermostat would start and stop the boiler until the desired air temperature was met. When the thermostat registered that extra heat was being released from the boiler, the central heating system would be shut down to conserve energy and prevent overheating of the home.

Modern central heating design has solved the problem of heat escape through improved insulation but in doing so, created another problem. The boiler and pipes are now much more insulated, in an attempt to conserve energy. Unfortunately, the frost thermostat is no longer capable of accurately determining the temperature. As a result, wasteful overheating can easily occur.

The pipe thermostat is one solution. The product is installed on the boiler return pipe. This thermostat detects changes in pipe temperature and prevents overheating by shutting off the system when necessary. There are several UK companies that sell the frost thermostat and low limit pipe thermostat together in one kit. These products allow you to adjust room temperature and provide frost protection for your boilers and pipes.

Installation and set up of these new thermostats is simple and quite intuitive. Guidelines for complete wiring and installation arrive in the kit, ensuring simple installation. The frost thermostat is usually set to 5C and the pipe thermostat is commonly set to 25C. Additional pipe thermostats can be bought for other exposed pipes, to further insure that your system is completely protected.

If the pipe thermostat fails to meet your needs, there are other solutions. A fully programmable room thermostat is one option. These devices can be installed in a number of locations throughout your home, usually in a living room or bedroom. Their job is to measure and monitor the temperature of the room. The thermostat can be set to change the room temperature several times a day, depending on the homeowner's needs. There are several kits that operate by means of radio signal, from the thermostat to the boiler. These Radio Frequency (RF) thermostats require no wiring, which makes them very easy to install.

Thermostats are a crucial part of the central heating system but there are other considerations to heating your home as efficiently as possible. Dividing the home into heating zones can be helpful. By focusing heat solely in the most populated parts of the home, less frequently used rooms can be kept at lower temperatures. This slight adjustment can reduce heating bills and heat the home more effectively.

Electric floor heating pipe Vs underfloor heating and hot water

Underfloor heating is a form of central heating, heat conduction and radiation of heat used for air conditioning. Can be used on floors with concrete floors and wood and all kinds. Warms the lower part of the space and the body radiates a natural warmth. Most systems are both hot water systems or electrical systems. System, a filler layer system in which the system is encapsulated in a mix of masonry, or may be an underground system, in whichis mounted directly on the ground. While there are differences and similarities between the two systems are both energy efficient and space saving and healthier than conventional heating systems.

Underfloor heating is by hot water is circulated through pipes or tubes that are contained in the soil. Since this system circulates water through the heater, is susceptible to air bubbles that accumulate in high and block the flow of water stop. A pump isbe used for washing, so that the water used through the pipes need to move fast enough to eliminate air bubbles. The pump is activated when the system is off and crashes when traffic is restored. With the alternative to electric heat pipe is placed on earth to spread. No need to be concerned about blocking or rinsing with a system of electric heating.

Heating Thermostats

With hot water, you need a pressure reducer to reduce the water pressure in the cityaccommodate the lowest point of the heating system, air separator, to take the air of fresh water, and a conservative change in the amount of water in the system, such as water heats and cools necessary. Electric floor heating does not require that this sophisticated equipment. You need a mat or cable wires, insulation, tile adhesive, and a thermostat to install the system.

Electric floor heating pipe Vs underfloor heating and hot water

floor heating, water can be made with cold water in the opposite direction can be used inthe system to heat a building. Sticking with this method, the surface temperatures above the dew point the air to prevent mold and avoid slipping. electrical heating systems are not designed to withstand the heat of a building or room. However, when the sun in an area that seems to be heated power lines, is the heat and allow the sun to heat the natural environment.

With water systems, the floor can affect heat loss. Heated andcooled surfaces must be insulated from vents, cold pipes and appliances. Dew point is a major concern for wet systems. Another concern is the control and expansion joints floor and oppression crack in the cement and tile. The electrical floor heating is not a problem because the electrical wires in an insulating board or installed directly onto the floor placed directly on a radiator. Adhesivebetween the layers and prevents the formation of cracks in the ground.

Water systems are expensive to install, but to increase energy efficiency at home 10-40 percent. The pipeline can last up to 100 years and is virtually maintenance free. The central heating system, pumps and control systems require regular maintenance and replacement. Electric floor heating systems have very low installation costs, because they are easy to install and lowStart-up costs. All you need is a thermostat. All you have to do is start the thermostat and wrap the heating cable heating cable or mat on the floor. They need no maintenance and can be performed more easily controlled when they are needed.

Both hot water and electric heaters to heat an entire room or heat that some parts of the room. control for a floor hot water heating specific areas, zone valves, you need to share at the pump, the heatThe flow of water to each zone, the heat is needed. With an electrical system, it is more than just a thermostat to control the heating zone.

Both hot water and electric underfloor heating allows the lower part of the room and body heat to warm. Since the heating near the surface of the soil warming up a room is installed faster than conventional heating. The heat spreads over the surface, which reduces the loss of heat without overheating the surrounding area.

Since it is hotWater, electric heating are buried under the floor, the floor like a giant radiator. There are no "hot spots" to create air currents that carry large dust particles through space. Since both the floor heating cause less air movement, reduce the spread of pollution, dust and allergens.

Both systems allow you to turn down the thermostat without heat loss. Both systems offer a lower air temperature that are warmer at lower temperatures, because it allowssystems to reduce heat loss from the body. However, the efficiency of a hot water system, slightly higher than that of an electrical system. With a hot water system, the boiler can be adjusted hot water temperature at relatively low temperature. With an electrical system, overall efficiency is lower because electricity must be generated by heat in a power plant.

While there are advantages and disadvantages of both under-floor heating, both are comfortable, healthy, saving space andenergy savings when it comes to heating zones in your home. There are no openings, plus unsightly radiators and do not provide this valuable space in your home. Replace a conventional heating system is hot water or electric heating of a plan to save space, while nice to keep it warm and healthy.
